Raymond Sifiso Dabengwa has passed away at the age of 66 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dabengwa, who was well-regarded for his visionary leadership in both the telecommunications and energy sectors, died on the morning of 1 September 2024, as confirmed by his family.

Dabengwa’s journey in the corporate world was marked by his tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015, during which he was recognized for steering the company through significant industry advancements. His time at MTN, however, was not without challenges; most notably, he resigned in November 2015 after the company faced a $5.2 billion fine from Nigerian regulators due to non-compliance in disconnecting unregistered subscribers.

Prior to his role at MTN, Dabengwa served as an executive director at Eskom and later became the chairperson of the power utility from 2018 to 2020. His leadership at Eskom was part of a broader effort to stabilize the organization during a turbulent period marked by governance issues and operational challenges.

Born in Zimbabwe, Dabengwa’s influence extended beyond corporate boardrooms. He was a staunch advocate for the transformative power of technology and education, believing in their ability to uplift communities and drive societal change. His contributions to these sectors earned him a place among South Africa’s top business leaders, and his impact on the telecom industry, in particular, has been widely acknowledged.

Dabengwa is survived by his wife and four children, who have requested privacy during this difficult time. The family has stated that details about funeral arrangements will be shared in due course.
