ANC member of parliament and former cabinet minister Tina Joemat-Pettersson has passed away aged 59.
The ANC confirmed the death of its former member of parliament.
Tina Joemat-Pettersson has served as Chairperson of the Portfolio Committee on Police, Comrade. Tina had served the people of South Africa in Parliament and government for several terms in various positions.
She served as the MEC for Education in the Northern Cape and later the MEC for Agriculture. After her election to the National Assembly, she was appointed Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries from 2009 to 2014 and Minister of Energy from 2014 to 2017.
She was a proud product of the people of her province, the Northern Cape, whom she held in high esteem.
Former Minister Joemat-Pettersson was born on 16 December 1963. She holds a Degree in Executive Management in Education from the University of Cape Town, amongst other degrees.
She was an active member of the Azanian Students Organisation between 1985 and 1986. With deep roots in the SADTU traditions, she lectured English at the University of Free State in 1993, and became an MPL of the Northern Cape in 1994.
She became Chairperson of the SACP in the Northern Cape in 1998, Trustee of Desmond Tutu Diversity Trust in 2001m, ANC NC Treasurer in 2003, and a host of other leadership positions.
