Veteran midfielder George Maluleka has made a significant move in his career by joining newly-promoted Motsepe Foundation Championship side Kruger United. The 35-year-old former Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns star has signed a one-year contract, with an option to extend for another year. After leaving AmaZulu FC at the end of the 2023/24 season, Maluleka was on the lookout for a new challenge, and now he brings his wealth of experience to the Bushbuckridge-based club as they prepare for their debut season in the second tier of South African football.
Kruger United’s Latest Addition
Kruger United, who earned promotion to the Motsepe Foundation Championship after reaching the finals of the ABC Motsepe League National Playoffs, are keen to make their mark in professional football. The club’s management is confident that Maluleka’s leadership on and off the field will be instrumental in guiding the team through the competitive league. The club, in its official statement, warmly welcomed Maluleka, stating, “The Kruger nation welcomes you to the family and wishes you well” .
Maluleka’s move is seen as a significant boost for Kruger United. His experience, gained over nearly two decades in the top flight, including stints at prominent clubs such as SuperSport United, Kaizer Chiefs, and Mamelodi Sundowns, will be critical in shaping the club’s future. With over 360 appearances and five league titles under his belt, Maluleka is expected to be a key figure in Kruger’s midfield .
A New Challenge for Maluleka
After a difficult end to his time at AmaZulu, where injuries limited his playing opportunities, Maluleka has opted for a fresh start in the second division. At Kruger United, he joins a squad that is brimming with potential but lacks the kind of top-flight experience he brings. This decision reflects his desire to continue playing at a competitive level while also contributing to the development of a newly-promoted team.
Maluleka’s extensive career includes playing a vital role in winning league titles with SuperSport United (2007/08, 2008/09), Kaizer Chiefs (2014/15), and Mamelodi Sundowns (2020/21, 2021/22). He has also represented South Africa internationally, earning six caps with Bafana Bafana .
Kruger United’s Ambitions
For Kruger United, the acquisition of a player of Maluleka’s calibre aligns with their aspirations to not only survive but thrive in the highly competitive Motsepe Foundation Championship. The club has already bolstered its squad with other experienced players, including goalkeeper Zama Dlamini, Ramasimong Maloisane, and ex-Bafana international Lehlohonolo Nonyane . These signings demonstrate Kruger’s intent to establish themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the league.
Despite a mixed start to their season—having won one, drawn one, and lost one of their first three games—the team is hopeful that Maluleka’s leadership will help them climb up the standings. His influence in the locker room and on the pitch could be the difference-maker in Kruger’s pursuit of a solid debut season .
