Forestry, Fisheries, and the Environment Minister Dr Dion George has hailed the South African National Parks Week as a significant event that highlights the country’s rich natural heritage. Kicking off the 19th annual National Parks Week at Marakele National Park in Limpopo on 8 September 2024, the Minister emphasised the importance of reconnecting South Africans with their natural environment.
“National Parks Week serves as a profound reminder of the shared heritage and awe-inspiring landscapes that define South Africa,” said Dr George. His remarks underline the critical role that national parks play in not only conservation but in nation-building and community engagement .
Free Access to Parks for South Africans
One of the key features of National Parks Week, which runs from 9 to 15 September 2024, is the provision of free access to South African citizens. This initiative aims to ensure that South Africans, particularly those who may not have previously had the opportunity, can experience the beauty and biodiversity of the country’s 21 national parks. The free access, however, excludes accommodation and certain tourist activities like cable cars at Table Mountain National Park .
Dr George also noted that the free access would be available to most parks until 13 September, with some extending the offering over the weekend, from 13 to 15 September. This gesture is part of SANParks’ commitment to making South Africa’s natural treasures accessible to all .
Encouraging Youth Involvement in Conservation
One of the Minister’s key messages during his address at the launch was the importance of involving young people in conservation efforts. Dr George pointed out that young South Africans should see national parks as more than just tourist destinations, but also as areas where they can build careers in fields like ecotourism, conservation, and environmental management.
“Our vision for South Africa’s national parks must extend to revitalisation and growth. By involving young people in conservation efforts, we create a virtuous cycle where the youth take ownership of these resources, ensuring they are protected for future generations,” said Dr George .
This year’s theme, “Own Your National Park,” speaks to fostering a deeper connection between the younger generation and South Africa’s biodiversity. By learning about ecosystems, biodiversity, and the importance of sustainable tourism, young people can leverage these insights into meaningful careers .
National Parks as a Pillar for Nation Building
Dr George also emphasised the role of national parks in strengthening community bonds. By combining efforts from local communities, businesses, and political leaders, the national parks can become a symbol of unity. “Our national parks serve as a reminder of what we can achieve when we work together,” the Minister remarked .
This sentiment was echoed by local residents like Prince Ngaoko from Thabazimbi, who praised the initiative for providing an opportunity to educate his children about wildlife. “Our children grow up without knowing the different types of animals; this is an opportunity to show them the animals,” said Ngaoko . Similarly, Nthati Serorisi from Bela-Bela stated that she plans to use this week to take her children to Marakele National Park to teach them about wildlife and the importance of preserving South Africa’s natural heritage .
