Suspect in Custody

Foreign national in custody over R70 000 worth of cat and crystal meth in Lephalale, following an intelligence‑driven K9 unit operation on Friday.

A 47‑year‑old foreign national is expected to appear in the Lephalale Magistrate’s Court in Limpopo on Monday, 9 June 2025, after suspected cat and crystal meth drugs valued at over R70 000 were seized at his home. The arrest took place during an intelligence‑driven operation led by the police’s K9 unit and tracking teams on Friday. Police spokesperson Malasela Ledwaba confirmed that officers executed a search warrant at the suspect’s residence, where the illicit substances were discovered.

The seizure highlights ongoing efforts by the South African Police Service to use targeted intelligence and specialised units to disrupt drug‑related crime in Limpopo. This bust targeted narcotics commonly referred to as “cat” and crystal meth, both highly addictive stimulants known for devastating individual lives and communities.

The joint operation, combining the expertise of K9 dogs and ground tracking teams, is part of an intensified police campaign to intercept drug syndicates before distribution. Ledwaba emphasised, “During the search at the suspect’s residence, police seized cat and crystal meth drugs. The suspect is expected to appear before Lephalale Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 9th June 2025.”

The estimated street value of more than R70 000 underscores the significance of the seizure, though actual income to criminal networks may be higher. Prosecutors will likely argue the volume points to distribution, not mere personal use, potentially attracting more severe charges. The courts will evaluate the evidence and decide on bail, a common procedure in drug‑possession cases.
