|Foreign Couple to Face Court over possession of Illicit Cigarette Worth R42000 in Sasolburg|
A foreign couple is set to appear before the Sasolburg Magistrate Court today, Monday, 08 April 2024, facing charges related to the possession of illicit cigarettes. The accused, whose ages range between 23 and 34, were apprehended this past weekend in an operation carried out by the Free State Police.
The operation that led to their arrest unfolded on the evening of Saturday, 06 April 2024, when members of the Sasolburg highway patrol embarked on a routine patrol along the R82. It was during this patrol that they spotted a white Nissan NP200 bakkie, prompting them to initiate a stop and engage with the vehicle’s occupants.
Detailing the operation, Police Spokesperson Sergeant Josephine Rani recounted, “It is alleged that on Saturday, 06 April 2024 at about 21:30, the Sasolburg highway patrol members were patrolling the R82 when they came across a white Nissan NP200 bakkie. The members stopped the vehicle and found the two occupants.”
Upon searching the vehicle, authorities made a significant discovery. “They requested to search the vehicle and discovered 3500 sealed packets of illicit cigarettes estimated to the value of R42 000,” Sergeant Rani explained, highlighting the notable seizure made by the patrol members.
The investigation took a further turn when it was revealed that the driver of the vehicle was in South Africa without the necessary legal documentation. “While the members were interviewing the couple, they discovered that the driver has no relevant document to be in South Africa,” Rani added.
