Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe, a revered icon of South African football, has passed away at the age of 74, leaving behind a legacy that will forever be etched in the annals of the sport in South Africa. Known affectionately as the “god of football” by his legion of fans during his heyday in the early 1970s, Moripe’s contribution to football transcends the pitch, resonating through generations of players and fans alike.
Lucas Moripe, whose career was curtailed in the late 1980s due to a knee injury compounded by a mild stroke, remained a pivotal figure in South African football, celebrated for his extraordinary skill and the grace he brought to the game. His impact was such that the Super Stadium in Atteridgeville was renamed Lucas “Masterpieces” Moripe Stadium, ensuring his name would remain synonymous with football excellence. Regularly attending matches, especially those of Mamelodi Sundowns, Moripe remained a fixture in the football community until his last days.
In a testament to his influence and enduring legacy, several former Sundowns captains, including Alpheus “Go” Mabusela, Daniel “Mambush” Mudau, Hlompho Kekana, and Surprise Moriri, paid homage to Moripe during this year’s Heritage Month by visiting him at his home in Atteridgeville. These interactions underscore the deep respect and admiration Moripe commanded across the football spectrum.
The news of his passing has elicited a wave of tributes from various corners of the football world and beyond. Mamelodi Sundowns, through a heartfelt statement, expressed profound sorrow and extended condolences to his family and friends. Describing him as a marvel on the field, the club acknowledged his role as a consistent presence at games and a pivotal figure in the community.
“Lucas ‘Masterpieces’ Moripe was not just a footballer but a true football god. His style, charisma, and unmatchable skill made him a figure of inspiration and awe. We pray that his soul will rest in peace, and his legacy live on to inspire future generations,” stated the Sundowns.
Similarly, the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) recognized Moripe’s unparalleled contributions to the sport, noting his journey from a national sensation to an international star in Hong Kong. The EFF’s statement highlighted Moripe’s indelible mark on the sport and his role in elevating the profile of football in South Africa.

“Lucas Moripe’s journey through football was nothing short of legendary. His name and legacy will continue to inspire those in the sport and beyond. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and all who loved him,” the EFF remarked.
SuperSport United also joined in mourning, emphasizing Moripe’s impact not only as a player but as a mentor and icon to many. Their statement reflected on the deep sense of loss felt by the football community and the void his passing leaves behind.
Clir Nasiphi Moya, the Executive Mayor of Tshwane, where Moripe’s namesake stadium stands as a monument to his contributions, issued a media statement detailing the city’s mourning and the collective grief of the community. He recounted personal interactions with Moripe, praising his resilience and dedication to the sport despite health challenges in later years.
“Lucas Moripe’s legacy is not just in the games he played but in the community he built and inspired. His contributions to Tshwane and South African football will never be forgotten. As we say goodbye to a true legend, we reflect on his incredible life and the countless lives he touched,” said Moya.
