In a decisive move to strengthen its organisational framework, the uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) Party has announced the establishment of permanent leadership structures in Gauteng and Limpopo, effectively dissolving all previous interim bodies in these provinces. This development marks a significant step for the one-year-old party, which has predominantly operated through temporary task teams since its inception.
At a media briefing held on Thursday, MK Party Secretary-General Floyd Shivambu emphasised the finality of the national leadership’s decisions and underscored the importance of unity and discipline within the party. He stated, “We call for maximum discipline in all structures of uMkhonto weSizwe. No one is permitted to constitute a parallel structure or process other than what is mandated by the organisation. We will decisively act against all elements that seek to defy the decisions of upper structures.”
New Leadership Appointments
The newly appointed leadership, referred to as “detachments,” includes individuals with diverse political backgrounds, some of whom have previously been affiliated with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) and the African National Congress (ANC).
In Gauteng, the leadership team comprises:
• Convenor: Witness Nyembe
• Deputy Convenor: Moses Makhaza
• Coordinator: Mzukisi Ronyuza
• Deputy Coordinator: Gavin Khungwayo
• Provincial Organiser: Musa Novela
• Deputy Provincial Organiser: Tiny Mokoena
• Fundraiser: Trevor Konela
Notably, Musa Novela, appointed as the Provincial Organiser, is a former EFF councillor in Johannesburg.
In Limpopo, the leadership structure includes:
• Coordinator: Tshilidzi Maraga
• Convenor: Charmaine Nel
• Deputy Convenor: Kgosi Phala
• Deputy Coordinator: Duke Ngoepe
• Provincial Organiser: Dephney Sibambo
• Provincial Fundraiser: Maxwell Chauke
Tshilidzi Maraga, the newly appointed Coordinator for Limpopo, previously served as the EFF chairperson in the province.
Emphasis on Discipline and Unity
The MK Party has faced internal challenges since its formation, including instances of infighting and competition for positions, especially following its impressive electoral debut, where it secured the third-highest number of votes nationally. In response to these challenges, Shivambu reiterated the party’s commitment to maintaining discipline and preventing the formation of unauthorised parallel structures. He affirmed that the decisions made by the national leadership are conclusive and binding across all levels of the party.
Upcoming Announcements and Future Plans
Looking ahead, the MK Party is set to announce its leadership structure for KwaZulu-Natal, a province considered its stronghold, on Friday. This forthcoming announcement is anticipated to further solidify the party’s presence and organisational structure in the region.
National High Command and Disciplinary Measures
In addition to the provincial appointments, the MK Party’s National High Command has taken steps to reinforce its internal governance. Advocate Dali Mpofu has been appointed as the Chairperson of the National Disciplinary Committee, while Deputy President Dr. John Hlophe will serve as the Chairperson of the National Disciplinary Committee of Appeals. Shivambu expressed confidence in their capabilities, stating, “Both advocate Dali Mpofu and the deputy president are among the best legal minds in South Africa.”
These appointments aim to address internal disputes effectively and uphold the party’s standards of conduct.
By-Elections Committee Formation
In a proactive move to prevent electoral missteps, such as the recent incident where the party fielded two candidates for a by-election in Msunduzi, the National High Command has resolved to establish a by-elections committee. This committee will be responsible for finalising all matters related to by-elections, ensuring that only the national leadership has the authority to approve candidates. Members involved in the Msunduzi incident have been suspended pending further investigation.
Relationship with the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF)
Despite past tensions, including the EFF labelling the MK Party as its primary adversary, Shivambu conveyed that the MK Party maintains a positive relationship with its Progressive Caucus partner. He stated, “The Progressive Caucus charter continues to define common progressive politics that we are jointly in common pursuit of.” This sentiment comes as Parliament prepares for its first sitting on 6 February, during which President Cyril Ramaphosa is scheduled to deliver the annual State of the Nation Address (SONA).
