South African Border Posts

The Border Management Authority (BMA) has announced the immediate, temporary closure of three border posts between South Africa and Botswana due to severe flooding. The affected ports of entry are Pont Drift, Makgobistad, and Derdepoort. This decision comes in response to heavy rainfall in the region, which has led to significant rises in water levels, particularly in the Molopo River, rendering operations at these locations unsafe and impractical.

BMA spokesperson Mmeme Mokgotsi stated, “The heavy rainfall in the region has resulted in significant water levels rising in the Molopo River, making operations at the three ports of entry unsafe and impractical.” The BMA has communicated this suspension of operations to the relevant authorities in Botswana to ensure coordinated efforts during this period.

Travellers and commercial operators planning cross-border movements are advised to utilize alternative ports of entry that remain operational. The recommended alternatives are Ramatlabama, Kopfontein, and Skilpadshek border posts. These facilities are equipped to handle the redirected traffic and ensure the continued flow of goods and passengers between the two countries.

The BMA has not provided a specific timeline for the reopening of the closed border posts, indicating that operations will resume once conditions are deemed safe. In the interim, travellers are urged to stay informed about the status of border operations and plan their journeys accordingly.
