All five suspects allegedly involved in the mass shooting that claimed five lives in Estcourt, located in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands, have been arrested. According to police reports, the suspects were apprehended after a swift investigation led law enforcement to their hideout in Acaciaville, Ladysmith, where they were found in possession of firearms and ammunition. The mass shooting incident, which unfolded in the Nyezane area of Amangwe on Sunday, 27 October 2024, also left one person injured.

In an official statement, the South African Police Service (SAPS) in KwaZulu-Natal updated the public on the revised death toll, confirming that five individuals were tragically killed in the incident. The suspects, aged between 23 and 46 years, are set to face multiple charges, including murder and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition, in court appearances scheduled in both Ladysmith and Estcourt.

Police Statement on the Arrest and Investigation

The SAPS statement revealed that the successful operation, led by Crime Intelligence, resulted in the arrest of the five suspects linked to the mass shooting. Law enforcement officers, acting on intelligence, tracked down the suspects to their “cooling off spot” in Acaciaville, where they were hiding in a single room. During the raid, police recovered two AK47 assault rifles with 115 rounds of ammunition, two pistols with 12 rounds of ammunition, and a .38 special revolver with one round of ammunition. Additionally, the vehicle believed to have been used as a getaway car from the crime scene was seized.

One of the recovered firearms reportedly belonged to a man who was killed during the shooting, suggesting a possible link between the suspects and the victim. Following the arrests, police conducted further investigations, leading them to another residence in Ezakheni, where they recovered an additional firearm. All seized weapons will undergo ballistic testing to determine if they are connected to other crimes in KwaZulu-Natal.
