Sentenced

The Limpopo High Court in Polokwane has handed down life sentences to five individuals for the murder of Collins Chabane Municipality Mayor, Moses Maluleke. The violent incident, which shook the community to its core, occurred in July last year at the late mayor’s home in Xikundu Village.

The convicted, Shumani Nemadodzi, Avhatakali Isaac Mudau, Wiseman Baloyi, Tshianeo Munyai, and Pfunzo Lidzebe, were also found guilty on charges of conspiracy to commit murder, robbery with aggravating circumstances, attempted murder, and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.

During the harrowing incident, Maluleke, 56, was fatally shot in the presence of his 18-year-old son, Ntokoto, who miraculously survived but remains afflicted with a bullet lodged in his hips. The community and the broader region have been profoundly impacted by the tragic demise of Maluleke, who was celebrated for his heartfelt dedication to service and community upliftment.

In response to the sentencing, Limpopo Premier Stanley Chupu Mathabatha expressed his satisfaction, underscoring the verdict as a powerful testament to the justice system’s determination to combat violent crimes. “This verdict marks a significant moment in our justice system, demonstrating our unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that justice is served for the victims of violent crimes and their families,” affirmed Mathabatha.

The Premier reflected on the monumental loss of Maluleke, not only as a personal tragedy for his family but as a significant detriment to the community and the province at large. “His untimely death is a stark reminder of the challenges we face in combating crime and violence in our society. The bravery and resilience of his family, especially in the face of such adversity, have been a beacon of hope and strength for us all,” he remarked.

Mathabatha conveyed his belief that the judgment would resonate as a deterrent against criminal activities, reiterating the necessity of embodying the late mayor’s values of service, generosity, and commitment to community development. “As we reflect on this case, let us remember the values that Mayor Maluleke stood for – service, generosity, and community development. Let his legacy inspire us to work even harder towards creating a safer, more just Limpopo where every citizen can live without fear,” the Premier said
