Five Foreign Nationals in Court Over Kidnapping of 9-Year-Old in Atteridgeville

Five Foreign Nationals

Five foreign nationals appeared in the Atteridgeville Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, facing multiple charges related to the kidnapping of a 9-year-old boy in Laudium.

The accused – Afghan national Maisa Hussain and Pakistani nationals Gulfam Azam, Yasir Mahmood, Bilawal Arif, and Faisal Khuoot – have also been charged with unlawful possession of an unlicensed firearm, unlawful possession of ammunition, and extortion.

Court Proceedings and Interpreter Arrangements

The case was postponed to next Wednesday to allow for the arrangement of a foreign-language interpreter, ensuring that all legal processes are conducted fairly.

How the Kidnapping Unfolded

According to police, the 9-year-old boy was playing outside his relative’s home with his cousin when a vehicle pulled up and the suspects abducted him.

While authorities were investigating the case, the victim’s mother received a ransom call, initially demanding R15 million for the boy’s release. The demand was later lowered to R6 million.

Police Operation and Rescue

The suspects’ vehicle was tracked to a shop in Laudium, where police arrested Hussain and Azam. Upon further questioning, they led authorities to a house in Danville, where the young boy was found unharmed and rescued.

At the Danville location, police arrested Mahmood and Arif, while Khuoot was later apprehended at his home in Laudium.

NPA Commits to Justice for Victim

Gauteng NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana assured the public that prosecutors would ensure those responsible are held accountable.

“The NPA is committed to pursuing justice for the victim and ensuring that the accused face the full force of the law,” Mahanjana said.
