Thabong, Welkom – A 27-year-old man was allegedly kidnapped and assaulted by a group of five suspects in Thabong, Free State, after being accused of stealing a cellphone. The incident, which took place on 15 February 2025 at approximately 17:00, has led to the arrest of three men and two women on charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Victim Kidnapped and Assaulted Over Alleged Cellphone Theft
According to police reports, the victim was walking in Thabong when he noticed a maroon vehicle following him. Moments later, a masked suspect wearing a balaclava started chasing him. The suspect caught up with the victim, and with the help of accomplices, forced him into the car’s boot before driving off.
While in captivity, the victim was allegedly assaulted by the suspects, who accused him of stealing a cellphone belonging to the son of one of the kidnappers. The group later drove to a second-hand shop in Welkom, where they allegedly attempted to recover the stolen phone.
Police Rescue Victim and Arrest Five Suspects
The victim’s mother reported the incident to the Thabong Police Station, prompting an immediate investigation. Following leads, officers traced the suspects to a second-hand shop in Welkom, where they were attempting to reclaim the stolen cellphone.
Upon arrival, police found the suspects and rescued the victim, who was located in the area. The five suspects, consisting of two women (aged between 38 and 50) and three men (aged between 30 and 40), were arrested at the scene. They now face serious charges of kidnapping and assault with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).
Victim Also Arrested for Robbery
In a surprising development, a case of cellphone robbery was opened against the victim. He was arrested on allegations of robbery, adding another layer of complexity to the case.
Police Urge Public to Avoid Vigilante Justice
Police spokesperson Sergeant Martin Xuma strongly condemned the actions of the suspects, warning community members against taking the law into their own hands.
“We urge the public to report criminal matters to the police and allow the legal process to take its course. Engaging in acts of kidnapping and assault is unlawful and will result in prosecution,” said Sergeant Xuma.
The five arrested suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
