First Group of White South African Refugees Expected To Arrive in U.S. Today Amidst Controversy Over Alleged Racial Persecution

White South African

On May 11, 2025, a group of 49 white South Africans, primarily Afrikaners, departed from Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport en route to the United States, marking the first arrivals under a new refugee resettlement program initiated by President Donald Trump. The program, announced in February, claims that Afrikaners face “unjust racial discrimination” in South Africa. The South African government has dismissed these allegations as unfounded.

Background of the Resettlement Program

In February 2025, President Trump signed an executive order directing U.S. agencies to prioritize refugee status for Afrikaners, citing alleged racial discrimination by South Africa’s Black-led government. The order also halted U.S. aid to South Africa, accusing it of pursuing anti-white policies and undermining U.S. foreign policy interests. The executive order stated that the U.S. would promote the resettlement of Afrikaner refugees escaping government-sponsored race-based discrimination.

The Trump administration’s decision has sparked controversy, as it fast-tracked applications for white South Africans while pausing other refugee programs, including those for individuals from war-torn countries. Critics argue that this prioritization reflects racial bias and undermines the principles of equitable refugee resettlement.

Departure and Arrival Details

The group of 49 Afrikaners, including families with children, boarded a private charter flight operated by Omni Air International. The flight departed Johannesburg and made a refueling stop in Dakar, Senegal, before arriving at Washington Dulles International Airport on May 12. Upon arrival, the refugees were greeted by U.S. government officials, including representatives from the Departments of State and Health and Human Services.

The refugees are expected to be resettled in various states, including Texas, Alabama, and Minnesota. The U.S. government has pledged to provide support, including housing, basic necessities, and assistance with employment opportunities.

South African Government’s Response

The South African government has strongly refuted the claims of racial persecution against Afrikaners. Officials assert that Afrikaners are among the most economically privileged groups in the country and are not subject to systemic discrimination. The government emphasized that while it respects the freedom of individuals to emigrate, the narrative of persecution is misleading and politically motivated.

Deputy Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Alvin Botes, engaged with his U.S. counterpart to express concerns over the resettlement program. The South African government maintains that its policies aim to address historical inequalities and promote inclusive development.

Domestic and International Reactions

The resettlement of white South African refugees has elicited mixed reactions both domestically and internationally. In the U.S., refugee advocacy groups have criticized the Trump administration for prioritizing white refugees while restricting admissions for individuals from conflict zones. They argue that the move reflects a racially selective approach to refugee policy.

In South Africa, many citizens, including members of the Afrikaner community, have expressed skepticism about the claims of persecution. They highlight that Afrikaners continue to hold significant economic and cultural influence within the country. Some Afrikaner groups have distanced themselves from the resettlement initiative, emphasizing their commitment to building a unified and inclusive South Africa.

Future Implications

The arrival of the first group of white South African refugees under the Trump administration’s program sets a precedent for future resettlements. The U.S. government has indicated plans to expand the initiative, potentially admitting more Afrikaners who claim to face racial discrimination. This development raises questions about the criteria for refugee status and the role of political considerations in shaping immigration policies.

As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the resettlement program will impact U.S.-South Africa relations and the broader discourse on race, immigration, and human rights.
