Fire Severely Damages Student Accommodation in Sunnyside

Student Accommodation

On Sunday, a fire broke out in a two-story building on Rissik Street, Sunnyside, Pretoria, designated for student accommodation. The blaze resulted in significant damage, destroying eight rooms and two hallways.

Rapid Spread of Fire

The fire originated on the first floor and quickly spread through rooms separated by partition walls. The City of Tshwane Emergency Management Services (EMS) reported that the partition walls facilitated the rapid spread of the flames. Firefighters promptly established incident command and commenced aggressive firefighting operations to contain the blaze and protect nearby exposed buildings.

Firefighting Efforts and Resources Deployed

EMS spokesperson Lindsay Zwelithini Mnguni stated that the swift actions of the firefighters saved the ground floor and most of the first floor. They also prevented damage to adjacent buildings. Firefighters concluded their operations early Monday morning, around 02:44, after ensuring the fire was completely extinguished.

The firefighting efforts involved the deployment of three fire engines, a ladder, a water tanker, a mobile command unit, a district commander’s unit, and a video unit. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire is currently under investigation.

Safety Precautions and Community Advisory

Mnguni urged residents to exercise caution when using electrical appliances and to ensure that children are not left unattended. He emphasized the importance of adhering to safety guidelines to prevent such incidents in the future.

Context of the Affected Building

The affected building, located at 163 Rissik Street, is known as The College, a newly remodeled property offering flats and rooms for students, couples, or families. It is conveniently situated within walking distance of Jubilee Square, Shoprite, and other amenities.
