Bloemfontein, Free State – A fire erupted at the National District Hospital in Bloemfontein today at approximately 15:20, causing a significant commotion but resulting in no casualties, according to Mondli Mvambi, Spokesperson for the Free State Department of Health.

Uncertain Origins of the Blaze

“This fire, whose cause is unknown at this point in time, started from outside the Paediatric Ward and caught the trees spreading to the first floor and second floor of the hospital,” stated Mvambi. The rapid spread of the fire led to smoke infiltrating various parts of the hospital, prompting immediate action from the hospital’s emergency teams.

Rapid Activation of Hospital Disaster Plan

The Hospital Disaster Plan was swiftly activated to ensure the safety of everyone within the hospital premises. “Patients and Staff were evacuated,” Mvambi confirmed. The Mangaung Metro Fire and Rescue Services, alongside several state and private emergency medical services, responded promptly to assist in the evacuation process.

Effective Evacuation and Patient Transfer

There were 83 patients in the hospital at the time. “23 were transferred to Botshabelo District Hospital, while the remaining 50 were temporarily moved to Gateway Clinic,” Mvambi elaborated. From the Gateway Clinic, patients are being taken to Universitas Academic Hospital, Pelonomi Tertiary Hospital, and MUCPP for further care. “Patients are prioritised in line with the need for continuous care in line with their various ailments,” he added.

This coordinated effort ensured that evacuation procedures were carried out efficiently and effectively, minimising any potential risk to patients and staff alike.

Continual Updates

This is a developing story, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available. Free State Department of Health is closely monitoring the situation and working tirelessly to ensure the continued safety and well-being of all patients and hospital staff.
