Fire Damages
By Lerato Mpembe
A significant fire broke out in Durban’s Jacobs industrial area on the night of 30 December 2024, affecting three companies, including car repair and ink manufacturing businesses. The eThekwini Fire Department is currently assessing the extent of the damage. No injuries or fatalities have been reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Nkululeko Dube, spokesperson for the eThekwini Fire Department, confirmed that chemicals were involved in the blaze. “The fire started last night and affected three companies. Chemicals are reported to be involved, but there are no fatalities or injuries,” Dube stated. The department is working diligently to determine the cause of the fire and the full extent of the damage.
This incident adds to a series of industrial fires in the Jacobs area in recent years. In December 2024, a factory fire on the corner of Chamberlain and Quality Streets resulted in significant property damage, though no injuries were reported. Similarly, in March 2024, a blaze erupted at a factory on Lansdowne Road, causing extensive damage but no reported injuries.
The frequency of such incidents has raised concerns among local businesses and residents about industrial safety standards in the area. Authorities are urged to conduct thorough investigations to prevent future occurrences and ensure the safety of the community.
As the investigation into the latest fire continues, the eThekwini Fire Department advises businesses in the industrial area to review their safety protocols and ensure compliance with fire safety regulations. Residents are also encouraged to report any safety hazards to the relevant authorities.
