Fikile Mbalula, the Secretary-General of the African National Congress (ANC), has extended congratulations to Mozambique’s newly elected President Daniel Chapo of the ruling FRELIMO party. This comes after the Constitutional Council confirmed Chapo as the winner of the October presidential elections with 65% of the vote. Mbalula’s message emphasised the importance of unity, development, and respect for constitutional processes in the region. However, the election has sparked significant unrest, with opposition parties disputing the results and the nation experiencing widespread protests and economic disruptions.

ANC Welcomes Mozambique Election Results

In his official statement, Mbalula reaffirmed the ANC’s respect for Mozambique’s democratic processes, calling on all political parties and citizens to accept the election outcome.

“The African National Congress (ANC) notes and welcomes the official declaration of Mozambique’s election results by the Constitutional Council. As a long-standing ally and partner of the people of Mozambique, the ANC reaffirms its respect for the constitutional processes and institutions that safeguard democracy in our region,” said Mbalula.

The ANC highlighted the shared history between South Africa and Mozambique, rooted in the liberation struggle, and emphasised the need for strengthened ties between FRELIMO and the ANC.

“Renewing and uniting the people of Mozambique, while strengthening the historic ties between FRELIMO and the ANC, is of mutual benefit in promoting people-to-people relationships and fostering inclusive economic growth for the shared prosperity of both nations,” Mbalula added.

Post-Election Unrest in Mozambique

While the ANC’s congratulatory message underscores support for Mozambique’s democratic institutions, the country is grappling with significant unrest. The opposition, led by Venâncio Mondlane of the PODEMOS party, has vehemently rejected the election results, alleging widespread electoral fraud.

Mondlane, who secured 24% of the vote, has called for nationwide demonstrations and a shutdown to challenge the legitimacy of Chapo’s presidency. Since the election, more than 100 people have reportedly died in clashes between protesters and security forces, highlighting the severity of the political crisis.

Economic and Social Impacts of Unrest

The ongoing protests have had a ripple effect on Mozambique’s economy, disrupting trade and leading to the temporary closure of critical trade corridors. This has also affected the operations of foreign companies invested in the country.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has revised Mozambique’s economic growth forecast for 2024, citing the unrest and the impact of Cyclone Chido as major setbacks. The forecast, initially set at 4.3%, has been adjusted to reflect the challenges facing the nation.

Calls for Dialogue and Stability

Mbalula’s statement also highlighted the importance of dialogue and mutual respect among Mozambique’s political parties to address the country’s socio-economic challenges.

“This is a crucial moment to rise above divisions and work collectively to address the socio-economic challenges facing the nation. The ANC underscores the importance of dialogue, mutual respect, and a steadfast commitment to the will of the people in ensuring political stability and sustainable development,” he stated.

The ANC’s position aligns with broader calls from the international community for Mozambique to resolve its political tensions peacefully. Western observers have expressed concerns about the fairness of the electoral process, further complicating efforts to stabilise the nation.

Strengthening Regional Cooperation

Mbalula emphasised the importance of regional integration and cooperation to promote economic development and peace across Africa.

“South Africa and Mozambique share a deep history rooted in the struggle for liberation and the pursuit of peace and prosperity for all. The ANC remains committed to deepening these ties and working closely with Mozambique’s elected leadership to promote regional integration, economic development, and peace across our continent,” he said.

The ANC’s message reflects its broader vision of fostering stability and prosperity in Southern Africa through collaborative efforts with neighbouring countries.

International Observations and Reactions

The international community has closely monitored Mozambique’s election and its aftermath. Western observers have flagged concerns over irregularities during the electoral process, casting doubt on the fairness of the results. Despite this, FRELIMO’s Chapo has been confirmed as president, with his leadership expected to focus on addressing the country’s pressing socio-economic challenges.

Neighbouring countries, including South Africa, have called for calm and a collective effort to rebuild unity in Mozambique. The ANC’s statement is part of a broader regional response aimed at ensuring political stability and fostering economic recovery.
