Free State Police Arrest
By Mpho Moloi
Ficksburg, 27 July 2024 – The Ficksburg police, in collaboration with the South African Revenue Service (SARS), confiscated 119 boxes of illicit cigarettes valued at approximately R1.5 million and arrested a suspect for corruption.
Free State Police Spokesperson Sergeant Mahlomola Kareli confirmed that on the evening of 25 July 2024, Ficksburg SAPS members received intelligence about the delivery of illicit cigarettes in the border town. Acting swiftly, the officers searched the identified premises and discovered the substantial cache of illegal cigarettes.
Corruption Attempt Thwarted
While the officers were securing the scene, a BMW with foreign registration numbers arrived. According to Sergeant Kareli, the driver of the vehicle attempted to bribe the officers with a large sum of money to avoid the confiscation of the illicit goods. The suspect, a 42-year-old man, was promptly arrested for corruption. Additionally, a significant amount of cash in R200 notes was confiscated.
Sergeant Kareli added, “External stakeholders, such as SARS, were summoned for further investigation. The suspect has appeared in the Ficksburg Magistrate Court and has been remanded in custody until 1 August 2024 for a formal bail application. Investigations continue.”
Commendation for Integrity
Free State Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Baile Motswenyane, praised the officers involved in the operation for their unwavering integrity and commitment to their duty. “This has proven that we have no space for corruption in the service; the act is taken seriously and the suspect will face the full might of the law,” stated Lt Gen Motswenyane.
