A tragic incident has occurred at the Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria, where a 36-year-old female patient was found dead in a bathroom. The Gauteng Health Department has expressed its condolences to the patient’s family as investigations into the circumstances of her death continue.
Incident Details:
The patient, who had been admitted to the hospital on September 21, 2024, was found hanging from a cellphone charger cable in the hospital’s Ward 37 bathroom on September 23, 2024. Two nurses discovered the patient after they forced open the locked bathroom door following several failed attempts to get a response. Immediate attempts were made to resuscitate her, but she was pronounced dead at the scene by a doctor .
Gauteng Health Department’s Response:
The Gauteng Health Department (GDoH) has confirmed that the South African Police Service (SAPS) is currently investigating the matter to determine the exact circumstances of the patient’s death. The department also noted that the hospital staff, who were deeply affected by the traumatic incident, are receiving counselling and psychological support .
Ongoing Investigation:
While the police investigate, the department reaffirmed its commitment to providing safe and compassionate healthcare services. They are also looking into ways to prevent such tragic incidents from happening in the future .
This unfortunate event has left both the hospital and the community shaken, highlighting the importance of mental health support and patient safety in South Africa’s healthcare system. The Gauteng Health Department has stressed that it is working to ensure the hospital continues to offer high standards of care while supporting the staff and patients during this difficult time.
