Klerksdorp – A 30-year-old father is expected to appear in court on Monday, 09 September 2024, for the alleged murder of his two-year-old son, sparking outrage and sorrow in the local community. The tragic incident unfolded in Kanana, near Klerksdorp, where the father is alleged to have poisoned both himself and his two young sons, leading to the untimely death of the youngest child.

According to reports from the South African Police Service (SAPS), the father had a disagreement with his 27-year-old girlfriend, the children’s mother, leading to their separation shortly before the incident. The dispute escalated when the father went to his girlfriend’s home on the night of 30 August 2024 and demanded custody of their three children, aged eight, four, and two.

Shocking Events Unfold

The following morning, on 31 August 2024, the mother reportedly agreed to let the children go with their father on the condition that her brother would accompany them for their safety. However, upon arrival at his home, the father instructed the children’s uncle to leave, taking the four-year-old with him, and leaving behind the two boys aged eight and two.

Later that day, the father allegedly called the mother, hinting at a sinister plan. Concerned, she immediately contacted the children’s grandmother. Shortly after, they received the devastating news that the suspect had allegedly poisoned himself and the children.

Despite the emergency response, the two-year-old was found in critical condition and tragically passed away at the hospital. The eight-year-old child, fortunately, was not harmed as he did not ingest the substance given to him by the father.

Arrest and Condemnation

The father was arrested on 05 September 2024 after being discharged from the hospital where he was treated for the effects of the poisoning. He now faces charges of murder and attempted murder. The SAPS has confirmed that the father will appear before the Stilfontein Magistrates’ Court to answer for his actions.

Provincial Police Commissioner, Lieutenant General Sello Kwena, expressed profound disappointment over the incident, condemning the father’s actions. “This is an utterly tragic and heartbreaking case,” Lieutenant General Kwena said. “A father is supposed to protect his children, yet this young child’s life was taken by the very person who was meant to be his protector.”

Kwena also applauded the swift investigation conducted by the Stilfontein detectives, which led to the father’s timely arrest. He urged the community to remain vigilant and to report any signs of domestic unrest before such tragedies occur.
