Fatal Multi-Vehicle Crash on R59 Near
A devastating collision on the R59 highway near Sasolburg in the Free State has left four people dead, marking yet another heartbreaking loss on South Africa’s roads.
The accident, which happened early on 18 October 2025, involved two trucks and a light motor vehicle, highlighting the ongoing dangers faced by motorists.
As investigations continue, authorities are urging drivers to stay alert and follow safety rules to prevent such incidents.
This crash comes amid rising concerns over road fatalities in the country, where thousands lose their lives each year due to accidents.
With the festive season approaching, officials are ramping up efforts to promote safer driving habits through nationwide campaigns.
Details of the Horrific Incident
The tragedy unfolded around 06:23 on the R59, just before the N1 off-ramp from Sasolburg. According to reports, the light motor vehicle was caught between two heavy trucks, leading to a severe impact. All four occupants of the smaller vehicle—a mix of adults whose identities have not yet been released—were pronounced dead at the scene by emergency responders.
While the exact cause remains under investigation, preliminary assessments suggest factors like poor visibility in the early morning hours or possible driver error may have played a role. No injuries were reported among the truck drivers, but the vehicles sustained significant damage, with debris scattered across the roadway. Eyewitnesses described hearing a loud crash followed by chaos as traffic came to a standstill.
Such multi-vehicle pile-ups are not uncommon on busy routes like the R59, which serves as a vital link between the Vaal Triangle and the Free State, carrying heavy commercial traffic alongside daily commuters.
Swift Emergency Response and Ongoing Probe
Emergency services, including paramedics and police, rushed to the site shortly after the incident was reported. Teams worked tirelessly to secure the area, provide medical aid, and begin recovery operations. “Sadly, four occupants of the light motor vehicle were declared deceased at the scene,” said Sipho Towa, provincial chairperson of the Road Incident Management System. He added that authorities are piecing together what happened and will share updates as more details emerge.
The response included clearing the wreckage and ensuring the safety of other road users. Forensic experts are examining the vehicles for mechanical faults, while statements from witnesses and the truck drivers are being collected. Towa’s contact number, 073 558 8223, has been shared for anyone with information to come forward.
In South Africa, road crashes claim over 12,000 lives annually, with a death rate of about 20.7 per 100,000 people. Provinces like the Free State see their share of these tragedies, often linked to speeding, alcohol, or fatigue—common culprits in early morning accidents.
Traffic Disruptions and Suggested Alternatives
The crash caused major delays, with the road initially closed to allow for cleanup and investigations. However, it has since reopened, easing the flow for travellers. Motorists were advised to avoid the area during the peak of operations, leading to backups stretching several kilometres.
For those heading from Sasolburg towards the N1, alternative paths include the R57 route or the R553 Golden Highway, which offer detours around the affected stretch. These options may add time to journeys but help bypass congestion. Drivers are encouraged to check real-time updates via traffic apps or radio bulletins and to plan trips accordingly, especially with increased freight movement in the area.
The R59, known as the Sybrand van Niekerk Freeway in parts, handles high volumes of traffic, making it prone to bottlenecks during incidents. Patience and caution are key, as rushing can lead to secondary accidents.
