Home Affairs
In anticipation of South Africa’s second Voter Registration Weekend, the Department of Home Affairs has announced extended business hours to facilitate the collection and application of identification documents. Offices will be open for additional hours on Friday, 02 February 2024, from 16:00 to 18:00, and will operate for nine hours over the weekend, from 08:00 to 17:00.
The forthcoming general elections for the National Assembly and Provincial Legislatures have prompted this initiative as the Home Affairs Department is seeking to support the Electoral Commission in ensuring that as many eligible voters as possible are able to register to vote.
Home Affairs services during this period will include applications and collections of IDs, as well as the provision of Temporary Identification Certificates (TICs), which are essential for enabling unregistered voters to participate in the electoral process. TICs, which come at a cost of R70, offer a rapid solution by being issued on the spot.
“Obtaining an ID is a critical step in empowering citizens to exercise their democratic right to vote,” the department emphasized. Acknowledging the importance of having the necessary documentation in time, the department is urging South Africans, especially the youth, to take advantage of the extended hours.
For added convenience, the Department has also implemented a Branch Appointment Booking System (BABS) that enables citizens to schedule their collection appointments in advance. The BABS can be accessed via the department’s website at www.dha.gov.za.
The Deputy Minister of Home Affairs, Njabulo Nzuza, made an appeal to the public: “We want to assist those who need an ID to participate in the voter registration an opportunity to come and collect their documents. We particularly encourage young people to come to our offices from Friday afternoon and over the weekend to come and apply or collect their documents.”
