Home Affairs to Open on Saturday
The Department of Home Affairs has declared its offices will be operational for an additional five hours on Saturdays starting from 06 April to 25 May 2024, with the exception of the 27 April 2024 public holiday. This initiative has been launched to facilitate the collection of Identity Documents (IDs), including the processing of new applications and the issuance of Temporary Identity Certificates.
The extended service provision is not limited to just ID collection but also encompasses a comprehensive approach to address challenges related to duplicates, amendments, rectifications, and dead-alive cases, provided the necessary supporting documents are presented. The department confirmed that the service hours during these Saturdays would be from 8 am to 1 pm, aiming to accommodate individuals who are unable to visit during regular weekdays due to work or other commitments.
Moreover, the initiative includes the reintroduction of mobile offices, aimed at reaching those in remote areas to deliver IDs where applications were previously made. “Local offices, collaborating with stakeholders including councillors, will disclose the specific dates, times, and locations for these visits. The mobile offices are set to bolster the efforts of the selected local offices,” the department announced on Thursday.
Adding to the convenience, clients wishing to obtain their Smart ID Cards and Green barcoded ID books can now arrange appointments through the Department of Home Affairs’ Branch Appointment Booking System accessible on their official website – www.dha.gov.za. This feature is designed to streamline the collection process and reduce waiting times. However, the department has left the door open for clients to walk in without an appointment if they prefer.
Deputy Minister, Njabulo Nzuza, particularly urged young individuals and first-time applicants to take advantage of this opportunity. “We invite people who have applied for their IDs, especially young people who are first-time applicants, to visit our offices to collect their documents. This initiative offers more options for individuals to obtain their enabling documents,” he emphasized.
