Durban, 5 July 2024 – The eThekwini Municipality in KwaZulu-Natal has embarked on two crucial projects to enhance water supply in the northern areas of the city. The initiatives include the new Northern Aqueduct Augmentation pipeline and a water rising main from Hazelmere to the Grange Reservoir.

Jabulani Mayise, Deputy Head of the Municipality’s Water and Sanitation Unit, announced the completion of the 600mm diameter pipeline, which spans 4.3 kilometres from Hazelmere to the Grange Reservoir. Since its commissioning, significant improvements in water supply have been observed in areas such as Grange, Everest Heights, Redcliff, and the Osindisweni Hospital area.

“The commissioning of this pipeline has brought noticeable changes in water availability, and we are pleased with the progress so far,” said Mayise.

Ongoing Efforts to Improve Water Supply

The commissioning of the new Northern Aqueduct is currently in progress and is expected to further enhance water supply to Verulam, Phoenix, and other northern areas. This new pipeline interconnects with the existing old aqueduct, aiming to improve water flow and cater to new developments.

“For now, we are commissioning for Verulam, Phoenix, and surrounding areas. Once we are done with this part, the pipeline will be commissioned to supply areas such as Cornubia and uMhlanga,” Mayise explained.

Addressing Historical Challenges

The old Northern Aqueduct, a network of bulk supply pipelines, has been in operation at maximum capacity. It conveys water from the Durban Heights Treatment Works to northern reservoirs. Due to increased residential and commercial developments, the existing infrastructure struggled to meet the growing demand, necessitating the augmentation project.

“Areas such as Verulam have been struggling to receive consistent water supply because their main reservoir, Mount View Reservoir, is at the end of the old Northern Aqueduct. The Mount View Reservoir supplies other downstream dependent reservoirs, namely Trenence 1 and three reservoirs,” Mayise noted.
