eThekwini Municipality Investigates Foreman Road Informal Settlement Fire

eThekwini Metro Municipality

The eThekwini Metro Municipality is currently investigating the cause of a fire that devastated the Foreman Road informal settlement on Wednesday night. The blaze completely destroyed 42 homes, leaving 83 residents, including schoolchildren, homeless. Fortunately, no injuries or fatalities were reported.

Residents of the Foreman Road informal settlement have faced a challenging start to the new year, with several structures reduced to ashes. Disaster management teams remain on-site, assessing the situation, while a delegation from the Human Settlements Department is scheduled to visit the area later today. Non-profit organisations have also mobilised to provide food and essential supplies to those affected.

This incident is not isolated; the Foreman Road informal settlement has a history of devastating fires. In October 2023, a fire destroyed more than 60 homes in the same area, displacing numerous families. At that time, eThekwini Municipality spokesperson Gugu Sisilana confirmed the destruction of 64 homes and noted that no fatalities or injuries had been reported. Disaster management teams were deployed to assist the affected residents.

The recurring fires highlight the vulnerabilities faced by residents in informal settlements, particularly concerning inadequate infrastructure and limited access to basic services. In May 2023, it was reported that the eThekwini Municipality would require over 90 years to address the backlog of issues in informal settlements across the metro, given current fiscal allocations and constraints such as limited well-located land and lack of bulk service capacity.

Residents have long appealed for the electrification of their homes and improvements in sanitation to mitigate such disasters. The densely populated Foreman Road settlement, housing approximately 3,000 shacks, has been particularly vocal about the need for formal electricity connections to reduce reliance on illegal and hazardous alternatives.

The municipality has acknowledged these challenges but cites funding limitations and ongoing land occupations as significant obstacles to implementing long-term solutions. The recent fire underscores the urgent need for comprehensive interventions to enhance living conditions and safety in informal settlements.

As investigations into the latest incident continue, affected families are receiving temporary assistance. However, the community remains apprehensive about the future, fearing that without substantial infrastructural improvements, such tragedies may recur.

The eThekwini Municipality has reiterated its commitment to addressing the needs of informal settlement residents but emphasizes that collaborative efforts and substantial resources are essential to effect meaningful change.

In the interim, residents and advocacy groups continue to call for expedited action to prevent further loss and to ensure the safety and dignity of those living in vulnerable conditions
