Man Arrested

Members of the South African Police Service’s (SAPS) border policing unit arrested a 43-year-old truck driver from the Kingdom of Eswatini for trying to sneak dagga into South Africa.

The SAPS divulged in a statement on Friday that the male suspect was seized at the Oshoek Port of Entry during the wee hours of Thursday. The police detailed the events, saying, “At approximately 00:30am, the suspect underwent scrutiny by the SAPS members stationed at the arrivals corridor of the border post.” Allegedly, “It was during this search that the astute members discovered the dagga discreetly tucked away under a consignment of timber.

The driver was immediately held and charged,” per the SAPS communique. A notable haul, the enforcement officers confiscated 150 kilograms of dagga, with the street value estimated at R630 840. The vehicle, which bore number plates hailing from the Kingdom of Eswatini, was impounded alongside the contraband dagga to aid in the deeper probe.

The arraignment of the suspected trafficker is slated to occur today before the magistrate at the Elukwatini court. Praising the vigilant team, Mpumalanga’s top police chief, Lieutenant General Semakaleng Daphney Manamela, lavished praise on the squad for their continuous effort. “The uninterrupted chain of arrests and triumphs at our frontiers affirm the unyielding vigilance of our border police. They are doing an exemplary job each day,” extolled General Manamela.
