Eskom’s Generation Recovery Plan has led to significant operational improvements, resulting in diesel savings of approximately R15.16 billion. The power utility has maintained a suspension of load shedding for over 230 days, marking a 69.9% reduction in diesel expenditure compared to the same period last year.
Enhanced Coal Fleet Performance
The Generation Recovery Plan has notably improved the performance of Eskom’s coal fleet. Recent data indicates that average total unplanned outages have decreased to 11,235 MW, a significant improvement from the 16,422 MW recorded during the same period last year, representing a reduction of 5,187 MW. This progress has enabled Eskom to increase planned maintenance activities, ensuring greater generation capacity to meet the nation’s electricity needs.
Energy Availability Factor (EAF) Achievements
Eskom has maintained an average EAF of 61.4% over the past week and 62.8% year-to-date. Top-performing stations, including Kusile, Medupi, and peaking facilities, have achieved an average EAF of 70% or higher. Additionally, four other power stations have recorded EAFs above 60%. With an available generation capacity of 29,157 MW and a peak demand forecast of 25,954 MW, Eskom remains on track to meet electricity demand. An additional 2,540 MW is expected to return online by Monday evening.
Outlook for Load Shedding-Free Summer
The outlook for a load shedding-free summer remains positive. Eskom’s sustained efforts in improving generation capacity and reducing unplanned outages have contributed to this optimistic forecast.
Addressing Network Overloading Issues
Despite the suspension of load shedding, Eskom continues to face network overloading issues in certain local areas due to illegal connections, vandalism, meter tampering, unauthorised network operations, theft of network equipment, and purchasing electricity from unlicensed vendors. These activities can lead to load reduction measures and extended unplanned power outages. Eskom urges customers to avoid illegal connections and to purchase electricity only from authorised vendors to prevent public safety hazards and ensure a stable power supply.

Community Involvement and Reporting
Eskom calls on community members to report any illegal activities that may cause overloading issues. By working together, communities can help maintain a reliable and safe electricity supply.
