The Power of Testing: Eskom’s Full Load Rejection Test at Koeberg Nuclear Power Station

Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility, has announced that it will be conducting a full load rejection test on Unit 1 at the Koeberg Nuclear Power Station today. This unit, which generates 920MW, has been offline for maintenance since December last year.

Eskom had previously committed to synchronizing the unit to the grid by the end of October but had been unable to do so.

According to Eskom, this full load rejection test is the final step needed following the installation of new steam generators. The purpose of the test is to verify and demonstrate the unit’s ability to supply its auxiliary load and return to steady-state conditions after a sudden disconnection from the national grid. This test is required under the South African Grid Code (SAGC) whenever modifications are made that could impact a unit’s capability to meet the SAGC requirements.

The steam generator replacement project involved significant modifications to various plant components, including control systems. Therefore, Eskom is following SAGC guidelines to test and verify the unit’s response to a full load rejection incident.

In preparation for the test, Eskom has successfully conducted various commissioning tests and is confident in the unit’s ability to pass the full load rejection test. However, the utility is also prepared for the unlikely event of a test failure and a resulting unit trip. In such a scenario, the Koeberg team is ready to respond and work towards safely returning the unit to service as soon as possible.
