Loadshedding

Eskom has announced a suspension of power cuts from 5am until 4pm. However, Stage 2 loadshedding will snap back into effect from 4pm and last until the early hours of Sunday at 5am, the power utility has confirmed.

This alternating pattern of relief and power cuts is set to continue through Sunday, with loadshedding being suspended again from 5am until 4pm before resuming for the evening. Eskom’s reprieve comes as the utility anticipates the return of additional generating units over the weekend.

For the past few days, South African households and businesses have been grappling with the inconvenience of scheduled power outages due to the national electricity grid being under tremendous strain. Until 5am on Saturday, Stage 2 loadshedding will be maintained as per the announcement.

In an effort to provide clarity to consumers, Eskom has provided a detailed loadshedding schedule. Residents and businesses are urged to refer to this timetable for further planning to prevent being caught off-guard by sudden power cuts.

In a statement issued by the utility, Eskom conveyed the current state and projections of the electricity supply:

“Eskom will closely monitor the power system and provide an update for the week ahead on Sunday afternoon. Unplanned outages have further reduced to 13 921MW of generating capacity, while the capacity out of service for planned maintenance is at 6 831 MW. Eskom Power Station General Managers and their teams continue to work diligently to ensure that additional generating capacity is recovered by bringing units on unplanned outages, and planned maintenance back to service. A total of 2 560MW of generating capacity is anticipated to be returned to service by Monday.”

On the subject of reducing electricity consumption, especially during peak hours, the power utility extended its gratitude to the public. “Eskom’s evening peak demand tonight is 25 095MW. We would like to thank those who do heed the call to use electricity sparingly and efficiently, including switching off geysers and pool pumps from 17:00 to 21:00 or when the load is limited. This lowers demand and helps in alleviating the pressure on the power system, contributing to lower stages of loadshedding,” said Eskom.
