Eskom Loadshedding

Eskom, South Africa’s troubled power utility, announced on Sunday that after a stretched period of 18 days without power cuts, loadshedding would be suspended until further notice.

Eskom attributed this positive development to the “sustained availability of generation capacity and emergency reserves,” presenting a glimmer of hope in the ongoing battle against energy shortages. In their statement, Eskom detailed the significant strides made in restoring generation capacity, saying, “A total of 2,150MW of generation capacity is planned to be restored by Monday.” In an effort to keep the public informed, Eskom also committed to providing an update on the situation on Wednesday afternoon and promised to “promptly communicate any significant changes should they occur.”

The statement further delved into the technical aspects of the current energy availability, revealing that “Tonight’s evening peak demand is 25,886MW.” This figure is significant as it gives insight into the expected power demand during peak hours, illustrating the challenges faced by Eskom in balancing supply with the nation’s energy needs. Moreover, Eskom highlighted the improvements in managing unplanned outages, which have been reduced to 12,850MW, and planned maintenance, currently at 7,368MW.
