Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, has announced a reduction in loadshedding from Stage 5 to Stage 3. This is due to the recovery of some generation units amidst ongoing planned maintenance.

The Stage 5 loadshedding, implemented at 05:00 today, will continue until 05:00 on Saturday. After that, Stage 3 loadshedding will be implemented from 05:00 until 16:00, followed by Stage 4 loadshedding from 16:00 until 05:00 on Sunday.

The decision to further decrease loadshedding stages during the weekend is a result of expected additional generation recovery, improved emergency generation reserves, and lower weekend demand. The power utility has provided a loadshedding schedule for reference.

Eskom intends to publish another update on Sunday afternoon unless significant changes occur.

Currently, breakdowns have reduced generating capacity to 15,895MW, while 5,474MW is out of service for planned maintenance. Over the last 48 hours, units at Camden, Kendal, Arnot, Matla, and Tutuka power stations have undergone repairs or been put back into service. However, the delay in returning units at Duvha, Hendrina, Kendal, and Matla power stations to service is contributing to the existing capacity constraints.

Eskom’s teams are working tirelessly to restore these generating units to service, and the power utility urges the public to continuously reduce demand by switching off non-essential appliances. They specifically request cooperation in switching off geysers and pool pumps from 17:00 to 21:00, as it helps alleviate pressure on the power system and contributes to lower stages of loadshedding.

To meet the evening peak demand, Eskom has forecasted that 28,536MW will be required. They express gratitude to those who respond to the call to use electricity sparingly and efficiently, emphasizing that every effort counts in alleviating the strain on the power system.
