Eskom has announced a significant reduction in its diesel expenditure, reporting a spend of R11.13 billion on fuel for its open cycle gas turbine (OCGT) fleet between April 2024 and February 2025. This marks a 61.2% decrease from the R28.7 billion spent during the same period last year, resulting in savings exceeding R17 billion.

This financial improvement is complemented by operational advancements. The OCGTs generated 1,825 gigawatt-hours (GWh) in the current period, a substantial drop from the 4,539.18 GWh produced previously. The OCGT load factor has also stabilized at 6.98%, down from last year’s 17.37%.

Loadshedding has been suspended for 317 days since April 2024, a remarkable increase from just 32 days in the prior year. Consequently, electricity supply has been available 99% of the time, a significant rise from the previous 10%.

Eskom’s Summer Outlook, covering 1 September 2024 to 31 March 2025, remains unchanged, indicating confidence in maintaining the current stability.

These developments are part of Eskom’s broader Generation Recovery Plan, initiated in March 2023, which has led to sustained improvements in the generation fleet’s performance. The plan has also bolstered business confidence, with credit rating agencies and banks viewing Eskom’s recovery as a positive contributor to South Africa’s GDP growth prospects.

In addition to financial and operational gains, Eskom has made strides in governance. The recent appointment of Leslie Mkhabela as Lead Independent Director aims to strengthen oversight and ensure continued progress.

Despite these achievements, challenges persist. Eskom has faced network overloading issues in certain areas due to illegal connections and vandalism. The utility urges the public to avoid illegal connections and report any suspicious activities to maintain the integrity of the power network.

Looking ahead, Eskom plans to return an additional 4,261 MW to service before the evening peak on Monday, further stabilizing the grid. The utility remains committed to maintaining a stable power supply and ensuring the safety and reliability of South Africa’s electricity network.
