Eskom
Eskom, South Africa’s power utility, has announced that it will suspend loadshedding over the long weekend in response to improved generation availability and anticipated lower demand.
Starting from 16:00 this afternoon until 05:00 on Saturday, Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented. However, after that period, loadshedding will be temporarily halted and will only resume at Stage 1 from 05:00 on Tuesday.
During the long weekend, Eskom plans to address minor defects on some generating units through scheduled maintenance.
In a statement, the company assured the public that it will closely monitor the power system and communicate any changes to loadshedding if necessary.
Eskom currently faces considerable challenges, with breakdowns accounting for 14,364MW of generating capacity and an additional 5,731MW unavailable due to planned maintenance.
In the past 24 hours, repairs were required for a generating unit each at the Arnot and Kendal power stations. The anticipated return to service of a generating unit at Kendal Power Station has been delayed, adding to the existing capacity constraints.
Despite these difficulties, Eskom’s dedicated teams are working tirelessly to bring these generating units back into operation.
The power utility’s load forecast for the evening peak demand stands at 27,406MW.
To alleviate strain on the power system and reduce the need for loadshedding, Eskom urges the public to continue conserving energy by switching off non-essential appliances.
Acknowledging the efforts of those who already use electricity sparingly and efficiently, including adhering to geyser and pool pump switching-off hours from 17:00 to 21:00, Eskom expresses gratitude for their contribution in mitigating loadshedding.
