Midrand, Gauteng – Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned power utility, has taken a major step towards a sustainable future with the official launch of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure at the Eskom Academy of Learning (EAL) in Midrand. This initiative marks a significant milestone in Eskom Distribution’s commitment to supporting the growth of the eMobility sector within South Africa and contributing to the nation’s broader goals of reducing carbon emissions.
The pilot project, a collaborative effort with Gridcars, involves the installation of ten EV charging stations across five Eskom sites nationwide. These sites include Brackenfell in Cape Town, Mkondeni in Pietermaritzburg, Tlhabane Customer Network Centre in Rustenburg, and Marathon Customer Network Centre in Mbombela. Each station is equipped with state-of-the-art direct current (DC) fast chargers capable of delivering 60kW of power, along with dual alternating current (AC) chargers providing 22kW, catering for both fleet vehicle overnight charging and workplace charging for employees and visitors.
In addition to the charging stations, Eskom has procured 20 electric vehicles, ranging from light delivery vehicles to light trucks, as part of its strategy to electrify its entire fleet by 2040. This move is aligned with the company’s long-term strategy to achieve net zero carbon emissions by 2050, an integral component of its Just Energy Transition (JET) vision.
Gabriel Kgabo, the General Manager in the Office of the Group Executive for Distribution at Eskom, emphasized that this initiative is more than just a step towards sustainability; it is also a significant contribution to the local economy. “By investing in eMobility and the necessary charging infrastructure, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also stimulating the local economy and creating new growth opportunities,” Kgabo noted.
The initiative also aligns with South Africa’s national policies aimed at fostering the growth of the EV market. This includes the Department of Trade, Industry, and Competition’s EV White Paper released in December 2023 and the incentives from the National Treasury that are set to boost local EV production from 2026. Eskom’s leadership in this sector positions the utility as a key player in the emerging EV ecosystem in South Africa.
The successful implementation of this pilot project is expected to serve as a blueprint for the broader rollout of EVs across Eskom’s entire fleet, further embedding the utility’s role in the country’s transition towards a greener, more sustainable future.
