Eskom Announces 39 Days Without LoadShedding, Highlighting Sustained Generation Improvements

Eskom, the nation’s primary electricity public utility, has announced that the persistent dark shadow of loadshedding will not loom over the country for the foreseeable future. This declaration comes after a relentless 39-day streak of power cuts was halted, signalling a beacon of hope for residents and businesses alike who have been grappling with the inconvenience and disruption caused by rolling blackouts.

Eskom’s recent statement sheds light on the optimistic trajectory the power utility is on, attributing the suspension of load shedding to “ongoing sustained improvements in generation performance.” This improvement is credited to the successful implementation of the Generation Operational Recovery plan, which took off in March 2023. It appears that the plan is bearing fruit, evidenced by the consistent and notable decline in unplanned outages, technically referred to as the Unplanned Capacity Loss Factor (UCLF).

The numbers speak volumes; from 26 April 2024 to the present, unplanned outages saw a sharp reduction by nearly 4,400MW, dwindling from 15,523MW to 11,036MW. In stark contrast to the previous year during the same period when unplanned outages surged from 16,882MW to 18,198MW, the current figures are a testament to Eskom’s efforts in stabilising the power grid. Notably, there has been no surge in the usage of the Open Cycle Gas Turbines (OCGTs) in the first week of May, maintaining the levels reported during the System Update on 26 April 2024.

A key indicator of Eskom’s improving health is the Energy Availability Factor (EAF), which has ascended above the 60% mark since 29 April 2024, peaking at 65% on 01 May 2024. This current year-to-date performance of 58.99% marks a significant uptick from the 53% EAF recorded in the corresponding period last year.

In light of the enhanced reliability of the generation fleet, Eskom is seizing the opportunity to conduct short-term maintenance, capitalising on the recent surplus supply over demand. This move is anticipated to bolster the operational recovery, especially as the colder winter months approach, further securing the power supply.

Eskom extends its heartfelt gratitude towards its hardworking employees, with special commendation directed at the Power Station General Managers and their teams. Their relentless efforts in expediting the recovery of additional generating capacity—by swiftly bringing units from unplanned outages and planned maintenance back to service—are proving invaluable. An impressive total of 2,600MW is expected to be reinstated by Monday, reinforcing the grid’s stability.

The utility also acknowledges the crucial role played by the public in this collective journey towards a more reliable power system. Eskom thanks all South Africans who have responded to the call to use electricity sparingly and efficiently, including the simple acts of switching off geysers and pool pumps between 17:00 and 21:00. Such collective action has contributed significantly to reducing the demand, easing the strain on the power system, and consequently, mitigating the severity of load shedding stages.

As of tonight, Eskom reports an evening peak demand of 25,853 MW. In its commitment to keeping the nation informed, Eskom promises to provide an update next Sunday or to promptly communicate any significant changes as they arise, ensuring transparency and preparedness for its consumers.
