Limpopo – Residents of Limpopo province will soon experience a shift in the way they manage and pay for their electricity. Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity provider, has unveiled plans to install prepaid smart meters across the province. This initiative is part of the utility company’s comprehensive meter maintenance programme aimed at enhancing electricity service reliability.
“Eskom Limpopo is thrilled to roll out the prepaid meter system province-wide. Introducing smart prepaid meters represents a major step forward in our efforts to modernize the electrical grid and improve service delivery,” said a spokesperson from Eskom. “Not only will this help consumers better manage their energy consumption, but it will also assist Eskom in reducing unpaid electricity bills.”
The roll-out is set to begin imminently and will be conducted in phases. Customers are advised to be prepared for intermittent power interruptions as the installation process progresses. These disruptions are necessary for the safe and secure installation of the new devices. Eskom Limpopo has expressed its commitment to keeping inconvenience to a minimum and has called for patience and understanding from the public.
Eskom’s move towards prepaid smart meters is thought to be beneficial in the long run, despite the temporary disruptions. Prepaid meters allow customers to purchase electricity in advance and use it according to their needs without the worries of monthly billing uncertainties.
However, the news comes amidst Eskom’s announcement of Stage 2 load shedding, which has been implemented province-wide as of Monday and is set to continue until further notice. The power utility cites a combination of generating unit breakdowns and high winter electricity demand for the rolling blackouts that have become a frequent occurrence in South Africa.
Through social media channels, Eskom has communicated the necessity of load shedding and requested public understanding as they work on managing the national power grid.
“While we understand the frustration load shedding causes, we ask that our customers bear with us as we work tirelessly to stabilize the power system. The introduction of smart prepaid meters is just one of many strategies we are employing to manage electricity usage more effectively,” Eskom stated.
Eskom also reminds customers to practice safety during the installation period and the load shedding, urging them to always assume that electrical connections are live.
