Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity provider, has recently announced that Stage 3 loadshedding will be enforced from 16:00 today until 05:00 on Monday.
The schedule will then shift to Stage 1 loadshedding between 05:00 and 16:00 on Monday, followed by Stage 4 loadshedding until 05:00 on Tuesday. This cycle will repeat on Tuesday into Wednesday. The full loadshedding schedule can be referred to in the provided table.
To address the current power supply challenges, Eskom urgently encourages the public to adhere to energy-saving practices. Any significant changes or updates will be promptly communicated via published updates.
According to Eskom, a breakdown in generating capacity is posing a significant hurdle, with 15,050MW currently unavailable. In addition, 4,434MW of the capacity is undergoing planned maintenance. Despite the return to service of a generating unit at both Camden and Duvha power stations within the last 24 hours, the Medupi Power Station has had to take a generating unit offline for repair purposes.
Furthermore, the return to service of two generating units each at Kendal and Tutuka power stations has been delayed, further exacerbating the current capacity constraints.
Eskom’s dedicated teams are working tirelessly to rectify the situation and restore full generating unit functionality.
In light of these challenges, Eskom urges the public to be mindful of their energy usage and reduce demand by switching off non-essential appliances.
Particular emphasis is placed on switching off geysers and pool pumps from 17:00 to 21:00, as this significantly alleviates pressure on the power system, contributing to lower stages of loadshedding. Eskom deeply appreciates those who have already embraced energy-saving practices.
Eskom said it acknowledges the inconvenience caused by loadshedding and the strain it places on various sectors of society. The urgency of this situation requires concerted efforts from both Eskom and the public to mitigate the impact of loadshedding and move towards a sustainable energy future.
