Eskom, South Africa’s largest electricity provider, has announced the implementation of Stage 3 loadshedding from 9am this morning until 5am on Monday. This decision has been made in order to replenish emergency reserves and ensure preparedness for the week ahead.

In a statement released on Saturday, Eskom also revealed a major achievement in the recovery of its Generation operations. Unit 1 at the Koeberg Power Station was successfully synchronised to the grid after a year-long outage, marking the longest outage in the station’s history.

During this period, three new steam generators were replaced, which is considered a significant milestone in the operational recovery plan and strategic objectives of Eskom.

While Unit 2 has been generating electricity safely during the Unit 1 outage, its own outage will commence once Unit 1 is stable and all required commissioning tests have been completed.

Although the scope of Unit 2’s outage will be similar to that of Unit 1, the lessons learned from Unit 1 will enable the duration of the outage to be reduced. However, Eskom emphatically stated that nuclear safety will not be compromised during this process.

The replacement of steam generators is of utmost importance for the extended operating license for Koeberg. Originally designed to operate for 40 years, Eskom has already submitted an application for a 20-year extension to the National Nuclear Regulator (NNR) for assessment.

The successful synchronization of Unit 1 has been hailed as a significant achievement by Eskom’s Group Executive for Generation, Bheki Nxumalo.

He commended the hard work and determination of Eskom employees, suppliers, and contractors who have endured the challenges of the extended outage.

Koeberg remains the only nuclear power station in South Africa, boasting a total capacity of 1860 MW, which accounts for approximately 5% of Eskom’s generated electricity.

The impressive capacity of the two reactors at Koeberg makes them the largest generating units on the African continent. With close to 40 years of operation, these reactors have been well-maintained and operated safely.
