Eskom Implements Loadshedding
By Thabo Mosia
Eskom has announced the implementation of Stage 2 loadshedding during evening peak hours (16:00–22:00) starting today, Tuesday, 13 May 2025, and continuing until Thursday, 15 May 2025. This measure aims to manage limited generation capacity and ensure continued electricity supply during working days.
Reasons for Loadshedding
The decision follows the delayed return of generation units amounting to 3,120MW from planned maintenance, coupled with an additional loss of 1,385MW in the past 24 hours due to unplanned breakdowns. These issues have temporarily pushed unplanned capacity losses beyond 13,000MW, aligning with risk scenarios outlined in Eskom’s Winter 2025 Outlook.
Eskom is emerging from an intensive maintenance cycle essential for long-term reliability but temporarily reduces system flexibility and resilience, making the grid more sensitive to unexpected disruptions.
Operational Excellence Programme
Group Chief Executive Dan Marokane emphasized the importance of Eskom’s new Operational Excellence Programme in restoring performance. The programme focuses on reinforcing oversight, strengthening accountability, and aligning service providers with stricter performance standards.
“We are determined to build on the progress already achieved. The delays in returning units are being addressed with urgency by senior leadership,” said Marokane.
System Outlook
Despite current pressures, Eskom reports that the system is in a significantly stronger position than in past winters. In the past financial year, 96% of generating capacity was available, compared to just 9% in the previous year.
Eskom is also expanding capacity, with three major projects on track to bring an additional 2,500MW onto the grid—a crucial milestone toward full recovery, supported by commitments from private sector partners.
Monitoring and Updates
Eskom will continue to monitor the system closely and provide updates as conditions evolve. The utility apologizes for the inconvenience caused and remains committed to supplying electricity reliably.
