Eskom
The national power utility Eskom has confirmed the suspension of loadshedding from 5am today, citing a dip in electricity demand and improved generation capacity. This break in power cuts is a temporary relief for South Africans who have been grappling with intermittent power supply.
The state-owned entity has attributed this reprieve to a projected reduction in demand and a boost in the availability of its generating units. “Due to the lower demand anticipated from Thursday until the weekend, and an increase in available generation capacity, loadshedding will be suspended from 5am today until further notice,” said Eskom in a statement on Wednesday.
Eskom’s forecasting indicates that the demand for electricity is expected to peak at 26,109 megawatts during the evening hours, while the grid is currently experiencing unplanned outages amounting to 14,335MW. The power utility also reports its planned maintenance is taking up 6,073MW of its generating capacity.
Providing further details on the operational improvements within the system, Eskom mentioned, “A total of 3,850MW of generating capacity is planned to return to service by Monday evening.”
While the temporary halt to power outages is a reason for sighs of relief, consumers remain cautious due to the erratic nature of electricity supply in recent times. An Eskom spokesperson reassured that “Eskom will communicate if any significant changes occur.” This leaves the door open for Eskom to reassess the situation and act accordingly depending on how the grid copes in the forthcoming days.
