Johannesburg – South African power utility Eskom has announced the continuation of Stage 2 loadshedding until further notice. The announcement was made on a Sunday as the company grapples with the challenges of stabilising the national grid and maintaining adequate emergency reserves.

In a recent statement, Eskom informed the public that despite restoring five generating units over the past 36 hours, the move to continuously implement Stage 2 loadshedding was necessary. This measure aims to prepare for the higher weekday electricity demand and address the slightly worsened condition of available generation capacity.

Eskom’s management will be closely monitoring the situation and will provide an updated outlook on Wednesday afternoon. The utility emphasized its commitment to inform the public of any significant changes that may need to be made to the loadshedding schedule.

The company reported that unplanned outages account for 14,759 megawatts (MW) of generating capacity, significantly affecting the grid’s stability. An additional 7,639MW is currently out of service due to planned maintenance activities.

Eskom has been working tirelessly to reduce the deficit in generation capacity, with the goal of bringing back 2,320MW to the grid by Wednesday. The general managers of Eskom’s power stations, along with their teams, are focused on achieving this target.

Anticipating the evening peak demand to hit 25,005MW tonight, the energy supplier is urging consumers to reduce their electricity usage during peak hours, especially from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Eskom highlighted key actions such as turning off geysers and pool pumps, which significantly aid in easing the demand and subsequently reducing the intensity of loadshedding.
