Eskom, South Africa’s largest power utility, will see a change in leadership as Mpho Makwana, the current board chairperson, is set to step down from his role at the company’s upcoming Annual General Meeting (AGM) scheduled for the end of October. The announcement was made by the Department of Public Enterprises (DPE) in a recent statement.

Makwana’s departure will pave the way for Mteto Nyati, a current board member, to take over as the new chairperson. The handover process is expected to be carried out throughout this month.

In response to the news, Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan expressed gratitude for Makwana’s contributions during one of the most challenging times for Eskom. The minister also acknowledged the government’s commitment to stabilizing the power utility and restructuring it into three separate subsidiaries – generation, transmission, and distribution.

Gordhan emphasized the government’s determination to ensure that Eskom acquires the necessary skills, talent, and experience to support the country’s pursuit of a more secure energy future. This commitment aligns with ongoing efforts to provide South Africans with reliable and sustainable power supply.

Meanwhile, Makwana expressed his gratitude towards the Republic of South Africa’s government for giving him the opportunity to serve a second term as chairperson of the Eskom SOC Limited’s Board of Directors. He extended his well wishes to Eskom and its employees, thanking them for their unwavering efforts to revive the utility.
