Eskom loadshedding

Eskom, the power utility, has officially announced the implementation of varying stages of loadshedding in South Africa.

Starting from 2pm today until 5am on Monday, August 24th, Stage 4 loadshedding will be in effect. Following this, Stage 3 loadshedding will take place from 5am until 4pm on Monday, and Stage 4 loadshedding will resume from 4pm until 5am on Tuesday.

From Tuesday onwards, Eskom states that Stage 2 and 4 loadshedding will continue until further notice. To better understand the schedule, please refer to the loadshedding table provided.

Eskom acknowledges that breakdowns have escalated to a capacity loss of 16,943MW, while planned maintenance is responsible for a further 3,761MW of capacity reduction. In recent developments, generating units at Camden and Matla power stations have been successfully restored. However, repair work has caused the offline status of generating units at Duvha, Grootvlei, Kriel, and Matla power stations.

Unfortunately, the delay in bringing a generating unit at Kendal and two units at Tutuka power stations back online is contributing to the current capacity constraints. Eskom vows to exert all efforts to rectify these issues and urges the public to assist by conserving electricity and reducing non-essential appliance usage.

Eskom appreciates the cooperation of those who heed the call to use electricity sparingly and efficiently. In particular, switching off geysers and pool pumps between 17:00 and 21:00 greatly lowers demand, alleviates pressure on the power system, and contributes to reducing loadshedding.

The power utility promises to provide further updates if any significant changes occur. Let us all work together to overcome this challenging period and minimize the impact of loadshedding on our daily lives.
