Eskom Loadshedding

Eskom, South Africa’s largest electricity utility, has announced that it will be implementing Stage 4 loadshedding from 2pm on Monday until 5am on Saturday morning. This decision comes as a result of increasing demand for electricity combined with insufficient generating capacity and the need to manage emergency reserves.

The power utility had initially indicated that it would only implement Stage 3 load shedding in the afternoons, followed by Stage 4 in the evenings. However, due to the current circumstances, Eskom has had to revise its plans and move directly to Stage 4 load shedding.

Currently, there are 15,424MW of unplanned outages at power stations, with an additional 6,280MW unavailable due to maintenance. Despite efforts to bring generating units back online, Eskom has stated that it anticipates only 1,300MW of generating capacity to return to service by Tuesday evening.

In response to the situation, Eskom is urging the public to reduce electricity usage by switching off pool pumps and geysers between the hours of 5pm and 9pm. This call to action is aimed at lowering demand and alleviating pressure on the power system, ultimately contributing to lower stages of load shedding.

The power utility has assured the public that its teams are working tirelessly to restore additional generating units to service as soon as possible. It has also committed to closely monitoring the power system and communicating any changes to the load shedding schedule as the situation evolves.
