Eskom warns of possible load shedding

Eskom

Eskom, the South African power utility, has recently implemented Stage 4 load shedding until further notice due to insufficient emergency reserves and generation capacity. This decision comes after four units failed to return to service as planned. In a statement released on social media, Eskom explained that Stage 4 load shedding was implemented at 02:31am on Wednesday morning.

Previously, Eskom had announced the implementation of Stage 2 load shedding from 9am to 4pm, followed by Stage 3 load shedding from 4pm until 5am the next morning. This pattern of load shedding was set to continue until further notice.

The power utility’s announcement has caused concern among the South African population who rely on a stable electricity supply for their daily activities. Load shedding, or planned power outages, disrupts various sectors of society, including households, businesses, and industries.

In response to the current crisis, Minister in the Presidency for Electricity, Dr. Kgosientsho Ramokgopa, visited the Lethabo Power Station to encourage the workers and acknowledge their efforts in maintaining the station’s performance. Lethabo Power Station is currently Eskom’s second-best performing station.

During his visit, Minister Ramokgopa emphasized the significance of the power station’s role in the South African economy and the impact of potential failures on the country’s poor. He expressed gratitude to the workers and encouraged them to continue their good work, highlighting the importance of meeting promises to support the poor, maintain employment rates, and foster economic growth.

The Minister also discussed the government’s plans to augment generation capacity and strengthen the national grid. In addition to relying on the Eskom fleet, the government aims to explore alternative energy sources such as gas, with a target generation capacity of 3000MW. Furthermore, plans are underway to connect renewables such as solar PV and wind power to the grid.

The government recognizes the urgency of the situation and the need for a comprehensive financing model to support these initiatives. Minister Ramokgopa has been assigned the responsibility of presenting a financing proposition to Cabinet to accelerate the expansion and strengthening of the grid.
