Loadshedding
Eskom, South Africa’s state-owned electricity public utility, has announced that Stage 2 loadshedding will be implemented starting from 4pm today as part of a strategy to rebuild emergency power reserves ahead of the coming week. The scheduled power cuts are to continue until 5am on Monday morning.
After a brief respite, the loadshedding will be suspended, only to resume again at 4pm on Monday and will last until 5am on Tuesday. Eskom has confirmed that this will be the pattern moving forward, with loadshedding being lifted each day from 05:00 to 16:00 and then Stage 2 loadshedding in effect from 16:00 until the early hours of the following morning, at 05:00. This cyclical routine will persist indefinitely until Eskom announces otherwise.
Stage 2 loadshedding is a measure that allows for up to 2000 megawatts to be rotated nationally at a given period. This level of loadshedding is executed to reduce demand and avoid the grid becoming unstable, which could lead to wider blackouts.
Eskom has reassured customers that they will be kept updated should there be any significant developments or changes to the loadshedding schedule. The public utility has also urged consumers to use electricity sparingly during the hours when power is available to assist in reducing the overall demand.
