Rolling blackouts (Loadshedding) intensify as South African power utility grapples with offline generation units.
South Africa’s power grid is under heightened strain as Eskom, the national electricity utility, announces the implementation of Stage 3 loadshedding starting from 4pm today, escalating from the less severe Stage 2 currently in effect.
The intensified power cuts are scheduled to continue until 5am Tuesday, after which Stage 2 loadshedding will resume until 4pm the same day.
Eskom has reported that over the last 24 hours, a series of generation units have been unexpectedly taken offline for repairs, contributing to a significant reduction in available power capacity.
The delay in the return of two generation units from planned maintenance has been expanded to allow for additional preventative measures, further stressing the already tight electricity supply.
With unplanned outages affecting 16,473 MW and units undergoing planned maintenance at 7,521 MW, the utility is faced with a daunting challenge in meeting the nation’s electricity demand.
Eskom has emphasized that their teams are fully engaged in returning an estimated 1,600 MW of generating capacity back online by Wednesday as initially planned.
The rolling blackouts are part of Eskom’s strategy to manage a national power deficit and prevent a total grid collapse. The updated loadshedding schedule foresees alternating between Stage 2 from 5am to 4pm and Stage 3 loadshedding from 4pm to 5am daily until further notice. Continuous assessment of the power system will determine any further adjustments required.
With the evening peak demand projected at 26,411 MW tonight, Eskom is appealing to the public to reduce electricity usage by turning off non-essential appliances.
The utility also extends its gratitude to those adhering to conservation efforts, particularly during peak hours from 5pm to 9pm, which include shutting off geysers and swimming pool pumps.
Such actions help mitigate the demand and alleviate pressure on the power grid, possibly contributing to a reduction in the severity and frequency of loadshedding.
