Asanele Velebayi
By Sello Masilo
Cape Town Spurs coach Ernst Middendorp has appointed Asanele Velebayi as the club captain for the upcoming 2024/25 season. The 21-year-old winger will be stepping into the leadership role following the departure of Chumani Butsaka, who recently joined Stellenbosch FC. This marks a significant chapter for both Velebayi and Cape Town Spurs as they prepare for the season ahead, under the guidance of Middendorp.
The appointment of Velebayi signals the coach’s confidence in the young star, both as a player and a leader. Cape Town Spurs made the announcement on X (formerly Twitter), stating: “Coach Ernst’s decision to appoint Asanele Velebayi as the new Club Captain is an indication of the trust he has in him as a player and person. We wish Asanele much success!” This move reflects the club’s dedication to nurturing young talent from within its ranks, with Velebayi being a product of their development structures, having joined the Urban Warriors 11 years ago.
A Rising Star with Proven Talent
Asanele Velebayi’s journey has been remarkable, making his mark in the South African football scene. His impressive form during the 2023/24 season, where he showcased exceptional skills on the wing, caught the attention of several high-profile clubs, including Kaizer Chiefs. The Chiefs had reportedly made multiple bids to acquire the young star, but Spurs stood firm, turning down the offers.
According to Spurs CEO Alexi Efstathiou, negotiations with Kaizer Chiefs were initiated, but the Soweto-based team failed to meet the financial expectations set by Spurs. Efstathiou noted that although Chiefs made a formal approach, their counteroffers were insufficient to secure Velebayi’s transfer. “We priced him fairly… but their offer wasn’t close to what we were asking,” said Efstathiou during an interview with Metro FM Sports Night Live .
Despite the transfer speculation, Velebayi has remained focused on his role with Spurs. His new position as captain comes at a critical time for the club, which is eager to solidify its presence in the Betway Premiership after a challenging previous season.
