Eminent scholar, academic, and heritage expert, Prof Muxe Nkondo, has passed away at the age of 83. President Cyril Ramaphosa expressed his deep sadness at the news, offering heartfelt condolences to Prof Nkondo’s family, friends, and associates both nationally and internationally.

Prof Nkondo, who passed away in the early hours of Sunday, 18 August 2024, leaves behind a remarkable legacy. He is survived by his wife, Prof Olga Nkondo, and their children Ntsako, Muxe, Mikateko, Zava, Mbonya, and Nkenyezi, along with several grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

President Ramaphosa praised Prof Nkondo’s extraordinary contributions to academia and public policy, describing his life as one that was “distinguished by his relentless pursuit—and generation—of knowledge that has made his country, continent, and the world a richer, more inclusive place.” The President highlighted how Prof Nkondo’s ideas and their practical applications have had a profound impact on both individuals and institutions globally.

Prof Nkondo held several prestigious positions throughout his career, including serving as the Vice-Chancellor of the University of Venda and Deputy Vice-Chancellor of the University of the North. His academic prowess earned him a Harvard Andrew Mellon Fellowship in English, and his influence extended well beyond South African borders.

As a seasoned lecturer, Prof Nkondo educated students at various universities in the United States, and he also provided critical guidance as a curriculum development and governance advisor to South African institutions such as the University of South Africa, the University of KwaZulu-Natal, Tshwane University of Technology, Central University of Technology, and Walter Sisulu University.

His contributions to public policy were equally noteworthy. Prof Nkondo chaired several expert panels and reference groups, focusing on a broad range of issues from tourism and human settlements to science, technology, arts, and culture. His leadership was instrumental in the conceptualisation of the Liberation Heritage Route, a significant project that aims to preserve and promote the history of South Africa’s struggle for freedom.

Prof Nkondo’s influence extended beyond academia. He served on numerous boards and associations across the African continent and internationally, further solidifying his reputation as a global thought leader.

Reflecting on Prof Nkondo’s legacy, President Ramaphosa stated, “His legacy is monumental and will continue to ripple through our lives. May he rest in peace after his extraordinary, enriched, and enriching life.”

The passing of Prof Muxe Nkondo marks the end of a life that was deeply committed to the betterment of humanity. His enduring impact on the world of academia and public policy will be remembered for generations to come.

Prof Nkondo’s passing has been met with an outpouring of tributes from various sectors. The academic community, in particular, has lauded him as a giant in his field, with many highlighting his role in shaping educational policies and mentoring countless students and academics.
